Admissions for the primary abuse of opiates such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and codeine, have increased steadily from 1.0 percent in 1997 to 8.6 percent in 2010, according to the national Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). Opiates now surpass cocaine (8.1 percent) and Methamphetamine (5.7 percent) as the primary substance of abuse. This trend reflects a growing use and misuse of prescription opiates in today’s headlines.
