international_overdose_awareness_day.jpgAccording to the National Safety Council (NSC), deaths caused by drug overdoses have risen steadily over the past 20 years in the U.S., and recently surpassed traffic fatalities as the leading cause of accidental death.

To help raise awareness of this national and global epidemic, the Penington Institute – which collaborates with organizations to identify and respond to specific substance use problems and their causes – established August 31st as the International Overdose Awareness Day. The campaign aims to reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have died or become permanently injured as a result of drug overdoses.

The awareness campaign encourages people to participate by hosting events in their communities. For more information about this effort and how to get involved, visit OverdoseDay.com.
